Hi, and welcome to the first CommsStack Brief. Each week we round up what changed in internal comms software: launches, AI features, pricing and market moves. Everything is sourced, and it's all short. This is issue #1, so write to us at hello@commsstack.io and tell us what you'd like more (or less) of.

1. The 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Intranet Packaged Solutions is out

Gartner published this year's intranet MQ on 29 September (authors Mike Gotta, Helen Poitevin and Alexandra Earl). According to Simpplr's write-up, it evaluated 16 vendors. Vendors that have announced their placement on their own sites so far:

Why it matters: every announcement leads with AI and frontline workers. Staffbase quotes Gartner calling it an "employee superapp". Simpplr highlights its scores for frontline support (4.4) and AI assistants and agents (4.2) in the companion Critical Capabilities report. If you're shortlisting, compare them side by side: Staffbase vs Simpplr · Simpplr vs Unily · all intranets

2. Interact ships an MCP server: your intranet inside Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude

On 20 October Interact announced Interact MCP, a permission-aware Model Context Protocol server. Approved AI assistants (Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Enterprise, Slackbot and others) can search, read and act in the intranet with each person's own permissions; Interact says agents can write, not just search. It also works the other way round: Interact's Conductor can call other MCP servers such as Workday and SAP. Interact says it exposes 700 capabilities across 26 areas, and it comes with Cue or Conductor at no extra connector fee. Full availability is "planned for later this year".

Why it matters: "the intranet as a destination" is giving way to "the intranet as a data and action layer for whatever assistant employees already use". Ask every vendor on your shortlist whether they have an MCP server, whether it can write as well as read, and whether it respects permissions per user. → Interact on CommsStack

3. Workshop launches AI Studio and custom agents for comms teams

Internal-email tool Workshop unveiled AI Studio on 1 October. It bundles custom autonomous agents (their examples: an "Alignment Reviewer" that flags contradictory leadership messages, and an "Executive Report Builder" that emails leadership a weekly recap), agent connectors, AI governance, unmetered usage and an MCP server. Workshop's own trends survey found AI use among internal communicators rose from 20% to 42% in twelve months. → Workshop vs Axios HQ · Workshop vs ContactMonkey

4. Frontline: Zipline launches ZipCoach

Retail frontline platform Zipline launched ZipCoach on 14 October. It's an embedded AI capability that uses "300+ performance, operational, and behavioral data signals" to give each store's field leaders prioritized, one-click coaching actions. Comms data is becoming operations data. → Zipline on CommsStack

5. Quick hits

  • Appspace "Vela" (Q4 release, 9 Oct): assistants with memory and session history, Appspace Intelligence available alongside Microsoft Copilot, AI usage insights for admins, and intranet auto-archive of stale content. Release post
  • Simpplr AI Control Center (launched May, cited again in its MQ write-up): one console to switch AI features on or off, choose from Simpplr-tested LLM providers or route requests through your own corporate accounts, with an audit log of every change. Expect "AI governance" to be a standard RFP line in 2027. Press release
  • The WhatsApp question: Staffbase and Teamwire both published guides in the last month on the risks of using WhatsApp for staff communication. If your frontline teams still run on group chats, see frontline apps that don't need a work email.

From the CommsStack data

56 of the 71 vendors we track now describe AI features on their own websites. The AI feature tracker quotes each one with its source and the date we checked. By our count, writing and drafting help is the most common (34 vendors), then AI search and answers (29) and AI agents (20). Only one vendor mentions MCP on the pages we checked, which should change fast after this month.
